288 GTO

The Ferrari 288 GTO (1984-1987) was built to homologate Ferrari for FIA Group B, a category that was abandoned before the car could ever compete. Announced in September 1983 and shown at Geneva in March 1984, it took the 308 GTB's outline and stretched it around a 2,855 cc twin-turbocharged V8 mounted lengthways rather than across the frame, the first such installation in a Ferrari road car and the marque's first twin-turbo production engine. Ferrari claimed 400 bhp at 7,000 rpm, 189 mph and 0-60 mph in under five seconds, from a car weighing around 1,160 kg with a tubular steel frame and Kevlar, carbon-fibre and glass-fibre panels. Group B required 200 cars; all 200 were sold before production began and the run was extended to somewhere between 271 and 274 depending on who is counting. The GTO's competition development, the Evoluzione, became the test bed for the F40, and the GTO itself is now treated as the first of Ferrari's limited-series flagship cars. Ferrari's heritage page states 272 (chassis 52465-58345, built 1984-1986), as do Wikipedia, Girardo, classic.com and the Gooding and RM Sotheby's Paris 2026 catalogues. Supercar Nostalgia and Hagerty describe 271 cars in 1984-85 plus a 272nd for Niki Lauda in March 1986; Drive magazine states 271. Talacrest states 273 road cars 'with 1 official pre-production prototype', and itself notes that figures vary. duPont Registry gives 272 as accepted but adds two later client cars for a potential 274. RM Sotheby's Monterey 2026 catalogue says only 'less than 300'. Not reconciled by any source consulted, so productionTotal is null.

History

Group B and the Entry Ticket

The FIA's Group B rules of 1982 asked manufacturers to build only 200 road-legal examples to homologate a car, with few limits on technology and none on boost. Ferrari announced a Gran Turismo Omologata in September 1983 and showed it at Geneva in March 1984. The factory never publicly used the name '288'; it was the internal designation for a 2.8-litre eight-cylinder, and the tail badge read GTO. Development ran under Giovanni Sguazzini with Nicola Materazzi on the engine and Harvey Postlethwaite on the composite structure. By the time cars reached customers in 1985 the fatal accidents in Group B rallying had already condemned the category, and its cancellation left the GTO with nothing to homologate.

An Engine Turned Lengthways

The 308 carried its V8 transversely. For the GTO it was turned through 90 degrees, mounted longitudinally with the five-speed gearbox behind the differential, and the wheelbase grew by 110 mm to 2,450 mm. Ferrari records this as the first longitudinal V8 in one of its production road cars and its first twin-turbo road engine. Capacity was 2,855 cc from an 80 mm by 71 mm bore and stroke, so that the Group B equivalence factor of 1.4 for forced induction kept the car under the four-litre class limit. Twin IHI turbochargers ran 0.8 bar through Behr intercoolers, with Weber-Marelli IAW injection and ignition, one system per bank. Ferrari claimed 400 bhp at 7,000 rpm and 496 Nm at 3,800 rpm. The 189 mph top speed was a factory figure from Nardo; Auto Motor und Sport recorded 188 mph on electronic timing in 1985 and Road & Track later published 179 mph.

Body and Frame

Pininfarina's Leonardo Fioravanti kept the 308's proportions and little else. The tubular steel frame carried resin-moulded, glass-fibre and Kevlar panels, a Kevlar bonnet, a Kevlar and carbon-fibre roof and steel doors, with a full roll hoop inside the roof and B-pillars. The rear subframe carrying engine, transaxle and suspension was designed to drop out as a unit, and the cam belts are reached through a removable panel behind the seats, which is why the two-year belt interval is less painful than on later Ferraris. Dry weight was quoted at 1,160 kg. Inside were Kevlar-framed bucket seats and pedals Girardo describes as comically offset.

Two Hundred Sold, Then More

All 200 homologation cars were sold before production started. Ferrari's page states that 272 were built between 1984 and 1986, chassis 52465 to 58345; the extra cars are usually explained as roughly 70 further orders plus a handful for the Agnelli family and other favoured clients. The last is generally taken to be chassis 58329, completed in March 1986 for Niki Lauda after Enzo Ferrari and Fiat's Vittorio Ghidella agreed to build one more. Whether that car makes 272 or is the 272nd of 271 plus one, whether Talacrest's 273 includes its pre-production prototype, and whether two further client cars followed, are questions the sources answer differently, and this page does not pick a number. No cars were federalised for the United States; every car left Maranello in Rosso Corsa with a black interior and left-hand drive, and a few were later converted to right-hand drive for Brunei.

The Evoluzione, the F40 and the Long Wait

With Group B gone, five Evoluzione cars and a prototype were built, with carbon composite structures and engines developed through the 530 bhp F114 CR to the 650 bhp F114 CK at around 940 kg. Ferrari quietly turned the programme into a test bed for the F40, which took the Evoluzione's enlarged, more heavily boosted engine, its construction methods and much of its silhouette. For two decades the GTO was then the quiet one: it listed at around £73,000 or US$83,400 in 1984, was overshadowed by the F40 within three years, and traded below it into the 2010s. It was re-rated as the market turned to analogue cars and as a run roughly a fifth the size of the F40's began to count for more than a modest power figure. By 2026 it had overtaken the F40 decisively.

Common Problems

The two-year cam-belt interval is the defining routine cost, though the GTO's access panel behind the seats means the belts can be changed from inside the cabin without removing the engine, and the belts themselves are cheap; a specialist described the job as quick by Ferrari standards. Turbochargers and the fuel system are the areas that wear: smoke on start-up, lag beyond the small pause inherent in the installation, and fuel-pressure faults are the symptoms, and a buyer's guide puts repair bills in the tens of thousands of dollars. The composite panels and the steel frame can develop stress cracks, and weld repairs to the frame are expensive to put right properly. Air conditioning, where fitted, struggles against heat from the bulkhead and was marginal even when new. The Kevlar-framed seats are narrow and the pedals offset, which is character rather than a fault but does put people off using the cars. The single most common issue is disuse: many GTOs have covered under 2,000 km in forty years, and the sub-1,000 km cars that make the headlines have typically needed full mechanical services before sale, as the 2022-2024 recommissioning of the Monterey 2026 record car shows. Cars stored badly rather than driven gently are the ones to be cautious of.

What to Look For

Ferrari Classiche certification and a Marcel Massini history report are now close to standard at the top of the market; every 2026 headline result carried a Red Book confirming matching engine and transaxle, and a car without one will be asked why. Because all cars left the factory in the same colour and layout, originality is read in details: the correct Speedline split rims and centre nuts, the three-shade red fabric seat inserts on non-leather cars, the tool roll with jack, wheel socket, mallet and spare belts, the round plastic tub of fuses and bulbs, the leather or Gucci-pattern document pouch, and the single Schedoni luggage piece where fitted. Girardo notes the pouches and tubs are especially elusive today. Establish the option content against the build record, since air conditioning, electric windows, radio and full leather were separate items and most cars had either all or none. Confirm the cam-belt service is within the two-year interval the handbook specifies; the job is done through the panel behind the seats and is not engine-out, so there is little excuse for it being overdue. Ask for evidence of turbocharger health, fuel-system work and cooling-system function, and look at the composite panels and the tubular frame for stress cracks or repair. Long storage is the GTO's characteristic history rather than hard use, so perished hoses, seals and fuel lines, seized ancillaries and a full recommissioning bill are the usual consequence of a very low odometer reading. Mileage should be reconciled with paperwork rather than believed.

The tracked range runs from $3,464,375 for a 1985 car in February 2022 to $11,555,000 in August 2026. The 2026 sales sequence is the story. Mecum sold a Rosso Corsa 1985 car from the Bachman Collection for $8,525,000 at Kissimmee in January 2026, which duPont Registry called the strongest public result the model had achieved. Days later Gooding Christie's sold chassis 52471, a two-owner 1984 car with just over 1,500 km, Classiche Red Book and a Massini report, for €9,117,500 at its Rétromobile Paris sale on 29 January 2026 (Octane described that figure as a hammer price; the house press release, which calls it a world record for the model, does not break out premium). RM Sotheby's Paris the same week made €5,855,000 for chassis 52727, a single-owner 1985 car with 24,244 km, air conditioning, electric windows and stereo, Classiche certified in December 2025. Then at Monterey in August 2026 RM Sotheby's sold chassis 54789, a 1985 car with 1,541 km, air conditioning and electric windows and a February 2026 Red Book, for $11,555,000 against a $9-11 million estimate, a new model record. classic.com also records a $6,825,000 online sale in July 2026. The spread between the Paris RM car and the Monterey car, roughly a factor of two for cars of the same year and specification, is almost entirely mileage and preservation. Notable Variants

288 GTO (standard European specification)

The only production specification. All cars were left-hand drive and, per the sources consulted, all were delivered in Rosso Corsa with black interiors. Variation between cars is confined to options and seat trim, which is why paperwork and originality carry so much of the value.

288 GTO with full options

Girardo lists four factory extras: air conditioning, electric windows, a Blaupunkt radio and full-leather Daytona-style seats. Most cars with one option have all of them, and cars with air conditioning and electric windows are called out in every recent catalogue entry.

288 GTO with cloth seat inserts

Cars without the leather option carry red fabric seat inserts. Girardo notes the inserts were supplied in three different shades of red from new, so a mismatch is not automatically evidence of fading or replacement.

288 GTO, Niki Lauda car (chassis 58329)

Completed in March 1986 after the run had ended, at Lauda's request and with Fiat's Vittorio Ghidella involved, and presented to him by Enzo Ferrari at an airfield near Reggio Emilia. Whether it is counted as the 272nd car is part of the production dispute.

288 GTO, Brunei right-hand-drive conversions

A small number of cars, approximately four according to Drive magazine, were converted to right-hand drive for the Sultan of Brunei. One returned to the UK through DK Engineering in 2015 with under 1,000 km recorded and needed a full restoration after years of storage.

288 GTO Evoluzione

Five cars plus a prototype (50253), built as the competition development of the GTO with a carbon composite structure quoted at three times the stiffness and 40 per cent less weight, and engines rising to 650 bhp. Low-mileage certified cars and ordinary driven cars are separating into two markets, and that gap is widening.
