The Ferrari 360 (1999-2005) replaced the F355 as Maranello's mid-engined V8 and was the first production Ferrari built entirely in aluminium, its Alcoa-developed extruded spaceframe being 40 per cent stiffer and 28 per cent lighter than the steel structure it replaced. History
Replacing the F355 in Aluminium
The F355 had sold around 10,000 cars in five years, and its replacement was announced at the Geneva Salon in March 1999. The decisive change was structural. Working with Alcoa, Ferrari built the 360 around an all-aluminium spaceframe of varying-section extrusions welded together through twelve cast aluminium nodes, with aluminium body panels and an aluminium rear subframe. Ferrari's own account is that the result was 40 per cent stiffer and 28 per cent lighter than the F355's structure, on a car roughly 10 per cent larger with a wheelbase stretched 150 mm to 2,600 mm. Kerb weight rose only modestly.
Pininfarina, Downforce and the 3.6
Pininfarina's design, credited to Goran Popovic under Lorenzo Ramaciotti, dropped the pop-up headlamps and swept the nose into two large intakes feeding radiators mounted ahead of the front wheels. Underneath, a flat floor and rear diffuser produced about four times the F355's downforce at a drag coefficient of 0.335, so the car could do without visible wings. The 360 was offered from the start with either a six-speed open-gate manual or the F1 electrohydraulic paddle-shift gearbox carried over from the late F355. The Spider and the Running Changes
The 360 Spider arrived in 2000 as Ferrari's twentieth road-going convertible. Because the spaceframe was already so stiff it needed little extra reinforcement, and the electric fabric roof, which takes around 30 seconds to operate, added about 60 kg. The production run carried several quiet revisions that matter now. Early cars suffered camshaft variator failures, addressed by a factory campaign and a revised part by 2001, when xenon headlamps also became standard. New wishbones arrived in 2002 in response to premature ball-joint wear, and 2003 brought transmission software allowing the F1 clutch's engagement point to be adjusted.
Challenge Stradale
Unveiled at Geneva in March 2003 with deliveries from that October, the Challenge Stradale applied lessons from the one-make Ferrari Challenge and the N-GT racing programme to the road car. Ferrari removed around 110 kg through carbon-fibre seats and door cards, a lighter floor, thinner glass and, as a no-cost option, sliding Lexan side windows; compression rose to 11.2:1 and output to 425 CV; titanium springs, recalibrated Sachs dampers, a 15 mm drop, 19-inch BBS wheels and Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes of Enzo specification completed it. Only the F1 gearbox was offered, with 150 millisecond shifts in Race mode. Ferrari's claim was 3.5 seconds a lap quicker around Fiorano. It cost 133,025 pounds in the UK when the Modena listed at 101,249 pounds. Production ended in 2004 and is disputed at somewhere between 1,200 and 1,300 cars.
Volume, Then Reappraisal
The 360 was built in far larger numbers than any previous Ferrari, comfortably over 17,000 cars, and for a decade after the F430 replaced it in 2005 it was simply a used Ferrari, cheap enough that many were driven hard and serviced casually. The reappraisal came with the disappearance of manual gearboxes from the Ferrari range and the rise of the lightweight-special market. By the mid-2020s a manual 360 was worth close to double an F1 car, and the Challenge Stradale had decoupled entirely, trading at three to five times the price of the standard coupe it was built from.

The F1 gearbox accounts for most of the 360's reputation for expense. F1 clutches are quoted at 15,000 to 30,000 miles depending on use. Cam belts are a three-year item regardless of distance and the service is engine-out on this car, so a belt date is essential. Exhaust manifolds with integral pre-catalysts break down internally on older cars; look for cracked manifolds or a replacement invoice, because ceramic debris drawn back into the engine has caused bore scoring. 360 Modena, six-speed manual
The open-gate manual was the minority choice at roughly 30 per cent of production, with 2,630 cited for the coupe. It is now the specification the market pays most for, and the last mid-engined V8 Ferrari berlinetta offered with a manual as a mainstream option.
